Living Spirit and its predecessor congregations have been on the corner of Bloomington Avenue and 45th Street since 1873. We care deeply about the Northrop neighborhood and the greater community in south Minneapolis. Below are a few ways we interact with neighbors on a regular basis. If you have other ideas, we'd love to hear them! Show up on a Sunday, send us an e-mail, or give us a call. Let's talk about your vision for our community.

Community Suppers

We serve a free meal to anyone who wants to join us every Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. The menu is always available ahead of time on our calendar. This isn't a need-based program; we want neighbors from all walks of life to show up and be community together for an hour over supper. Volunteers are always welcome, whether you plan ahead or are inspired in the moment to help.

TEAM Tutoring

TEAM Tutoring provides weekly homework help and educational opportunities for children referred to us by their school. Each student meets with their tutor on Wednesday evenings to eat supper, go over homework, and provide support. Each week a guest also makes a brief presentation about their job.

Backpack Food Program

One in five families with children in Minnesota faces food insecurity. This often means that they rely on the meals provided at school to make ends meet. But school meals don't come on weekends or holidays, and children need nutrition every day. The backpack food program provides backpacks full of shelf-stable groceries to high need elementary school students in the neighborhood every Friday. The food helps bridge the gap between school meals and the students return empty backpacks on Monday to be refilled for the next weekend.

Community Garden

The name says it all—we have a community garden, and it's open to community members! We've expanded the garden over the past few years and are thrilled to have continued participation from our neighbors. If you would like to garden with us next season, send us an e-mail and we'll be sure to keep you in the loop.
