Advent at Living Spirit

This Advent we are reflecting on the connections between the Christmas story told in the book of Luke, popular Christmas carols, and the injustices we protest in 2018. Below, you will find a weekly meditation based on a specific carol.

Join us on Christmas Eve, December 24, for candlelight worship at 10:00 p.m.

God of mercy, help us to listen to your voice, a voice that speaks of peace to all people. Let the sound resonate within us, until a whisper becomes a shout which cannot be ignored. Move us with your love, so that our actions echo your peace, and we may bring tidings of comfort and joy to those touched by conflict. Fill us with your hope, O Lord, and quiet the fear and hatred which divides us, as we seek to build a future together of true and lasting peace. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Prince of Peace. Amen.
— Advent Prayer

Week 1 (December 2–8):

Listen to Canticle of the Turning. Reflect on the question: What things need to turn this Advent?

Week 2 (December 9–15):

Listen to O Holy Night. Reflect on the lyrics “chains shall He break,” and “in His name all oppression shall cease.” What chains need breaking in your life? In the world? What would an end to oppression look like?

Week 3 (December 16–22):

Listen to Do You Hear What I Hear? Reflect on the lyrics, “a child shivers in the night,” and “pray for peace people everywhere.” Pray for people left outside (literally or figuratively). Pray for peace, and imagine others around the world praying for the same.

Week 4 (December 23–24):

Listen to I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. Reflect on the ways the author of the song moves from despair to hope. Where do you find hope in the midst of despair?
